Description

[帆足杏雨 Hoashi Anzu] 1810-1884
A southern painter from the end of the Edo period and the Meiji period. Born in Bungo. His first name is To, his character is Chodai, and his other name is Choshu Hanno. Studied painting under Takeda Tanomura, and poetry under Mari Hoashi and Tanso Hirose. Later, he moved to Tokyo and received painting lessons from Shunkin Urakami, and also interacted with Sanyo Rai and Kotake Shinozaki. He established a unique style of painting that clearly conveyed Takeda's true spirit, and was particularly good at landscapes. Died in 1884 at the age of 75.
