Description

“British Barrage-Balloon Secrets” A look at the Barrage-Balloons designed to destroy low flying aircraft as protection against dive bombers.

To counter the threat, Balloons were anchored with a winch and raised with heavy cables. These forced low flying aircraft into the effective range of Anti-Aircraft Defences.

The balloons were simple to manufacture and operate, and were grouped into Squadrons like fighter aircraft, which were mainly crewed by the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.
