For sale is my late 1972 VW 1303S.

Electric Tudor Webasto sliding sunroof - 34000 miles - Recent engine overhaul - Porsche D90 Wheels

This car was first registered on 26/01/1973, making it one of the earliest examples of the 1303 shape. I have owned this car for around a year and a half and have enjoyed every moment of it. It has an original Tudor Webasto electric sunroof which makes it incredibly rare. During my ownership I have spent a long time scouring google and I have only ever seen two of these around.

Externally, the gold paint is very striking and suits the car very well, being a very 70's colour. When you get close to the car, you can see that the bodywork is not perfect. It has suffered from the death foam rust however none of it has come through yet, as you can see in the photos it is just bubbling. Around the car, it has a few odd marks where the paint is getting old but overall I would give it a 6 or 7/10 for the bodywork, but as mentioned it looks absolutely incredible from a few feet away. It's sitting on some genuine Porsche D90 wheels which have the 964 part number, I was told that from Porsche these would've been £2.5k back in the day. I bought these as NOS parts and still have the boxes which are dated 1993, they had never been opened before I bought them. I fitted these in June 2023, and had brand new Maxxis tyres fitted which have since only done around 100 miles. These cost me £400.

Moving to the interior, it has the original high back seats which are rare in themselves. The rear bench has been fitted with new Empi vinyl (£180), and I have some for the front seats which I haven't got round to fitting yet, these will come with the car. It has a mexico style parcel shelf (£70) which has been fitted with JBL Club 522F speakers which sound great and aren't too loud. It also has a bluetooth retro look stereo with a remote, however I haven't wired up the radio setting, although the bluetooth function is working perfectly. The dashboard has a couple of sun cracks on top of the speedo hump, but these have never bothered me. It has a full carpet set. The headlining isn't perfect and could do with some attention in places.

Mechanically, the engine has had a tune up a few days ago. The engine is not original, and is from a Mexican car. It has had an oil change recently with Castrol classic oil, replacement Bosch spark plugs which I have many spares of, ignition points and condenser, and more. It had a new carburettor a few years ago which lets it run great. In my ownership, I have fitted a ceramic coated Empi 2 Tip GT Exhaust (£500) which sounds absolutely fantastic. With this I replaced all exhaust clamps and seals. I also fitted stainless steel Empi rocker covers, generator pulley, oil dipstick and oil sump plate and studs, as well as a stainless steel Scat air filter, of which I still have the original which is desirable. The engine is running amazingly and it pulls strong, keeping up with modern day traffic, and it has never leaked oil in my ownership, however below the distributor there is a very slight weep, but it does not drip. I have added new Sebro brake discs on the front, as well as new wheel bearings and backing plates.

The chassis is absolutely rock solid. At some point the underside was sealed, which has protected it from rust very well. There are signs of previous welding around the jacking points. The floor pans and heater channels are solid, and underneath it is a clean car for its age.

Overall, the car has just over 34000 miles on the clock. All MOTs available match with this, but I cannot be sure that this is the genuine mileage. When I changed the wheels, the odometer stopped working, and I believe this is because the speedo cable is not seated properly. I have photos to prove that the speedo worked up until this point. The sunroof works great, as well as all of the other electrics.
I have service history going back over 10 years ago, however all the original documents from when the car was new are with a previous owner. I have tried contacting them but to no avail. I have boxes and boxes of spares as well as some original parts I took off the car like the discs, backing plates, air box etc. It will also come with an NLA VW super beetle specific breathable outdoor car cover, worth over £100. I have spent a small fortune on this car in my ownership, with receipts.

I have been as honest as I can about the car. To see more photos, copy and paste the google drive link below into your browser. Located in West Sussex BN16. Contact Callum 07917904359. Thanks for reading.
