Antique Gold Mechanical Pencil & Seal

English * Circa 1890s

The case of this antique pencil is gold rolled or filled.  It has a hexagonal barrel with hand engraved leafy scrolls on the panels. The ornate finial at the top is set with a bloodstone seal. The ring on the barrel slides forward to push out the nozzle for use. The nozzle has all of its parts and it's in excellent working condition (twists to advance the lead). It uses a 1.0 mm diameter lead.

The pencil measures almost 2 1/4" long closed and 3 1/4" long extended. The condition is excellent with no dents, splits or other damage. The seal top unscrews and holds extra leads in the compartment below. Several similar pencils are shown on p. 68 of Deborah Crosby's book Victorian Pencils, Tools to Jewels. This one was bought in England.
