BESCHREIBUNG
Seltene erste Ausgabe der von Kempen verfassten Biographie über Jesus, hier zusammen mit den Spirituales ascensiones des Gerard Zerbold van Zutphen erschienen.
Das Werk enthält ebenso Geschichten und Kommentare von Kirchenvätern und eine Reihe von dogmatischen und moralischen Dissertationen, spirituellen Anleitungen, Meditationen und Gebete. Das Werk wird meist Thomas à Kempis, aber auch Henricus Arnoldi zugeschrieben (vgl. Zeitschrift für Katholische Theologie, 1896, S.171).
Thomas a Kempis, war ein Augustiner-Chorherr, Mystiker und geistlicher Schriftsteller des 15. Jahrhunderts. Seine vierteilige Schrift Nachfolge Christi (De imitatione Christi) stellte lange Zeit das nach der Bibel meistverbreitete Buch dar.
Hübsche, kleine, wohlerhaltene Inkunabel im attraktiven spätgotischen Originaleinband.
AUSSTATTUNG
Einspaltige, gotische Type in 25 Zeilen. Am Anfang der Prefatio eine blaue Schmuck-Initiale mit rotem Besatz- und Randornament Etliche handgemalte Lombarden in Rot und Blau. Durchweg in Rot rubriziert. Einige zeitgenössische Randkommentare in brauner Tinte.
Abmessungen Blatt: 13,5 x 9,5 cm; Satzspiegel: 9,5 x 6 cm.

Es fehlen die Blatt b1, b8 und das letzte leere Blatt.

EINBAND
Originaler, spätgotischer Nürnberger Einband. Blindgeprägtes Kalbsleder über Holzdeckeln auf drei Bünden. Die Deckel mit Rahmen aus doppelten Streicheisenlinien. Im Außenrand zwei verschiedene Rosettenstempel (Kyriss 114 - Fünfblättrige Rose I), im gerauteten Mittelfeld zahlreiche kleine rhombische Stempel, darunter das Wappen von Nürnberg sowie ungeflügelter Drache, wie in der mit der ersteren in Verbindung stehenden Werkstatt Kyriss 19 (Nürnberg Augustiner, 2. Gruppe). Rücken mit Blütenstempeln. Auf den Deckeln zehn Buckelbeschläge aus Messing sowie zwei intakte Schließen mit gepunzten Beschlägen. Die Schließbänder erneuert. Späteres, fragmentarisch erhaltenes handschriftliches Rückenschild. Sehr guter Zustand. Deckel etwas berieben und mit minimalen Lederdefekten an den Kanten. Der ehemals gebrochene Vorderdeckel fachmännisch restauriert. Die vorderen Vorsätze und das hintere Vorsatzblatt in späterer Zeit erneuert. Der hintere Spiegel mit handschriftlichen, theologischen Text des 15./16. Jahrhunderts versehen.
Abmessungen: 14,5 x 10,5 x 5,7 cm.
ZUSTAND
Sehr gute, originale Erhaltung. Breitrandiges Exemplar. Vollständig rubriziert. Papier gleichmäßig nur leicht gebräunt. Nur vereinzelt durch die Schließen verursachte, kleine Randmängel am rechten Außenrand. Erste und letzte Blatt mit kleinen Wurmlöchlein in den breiten Außenrändern. In den Rändern partiell etwas fleckig, Satzspiegel durchweg sauber. Einige Randkommentare einer zeitgenössischen Hand in brauner Tinte.

DESCRIPTION
Rare first edition of Kempen's biography of Jesus, published here together with the Spirituales ascensiones by Gerard Zerbold van Zutphen. The work also contains histories and commentaries by church fathers and a series of dogmatic and moral dissertations, spiritual instructions, meditations and prayers.
The work is usually attributed to Thomas à Kempis, but also to Henricus Arnoldi (cf. Zeitschrift für Katholische Theologie, 1896, p.171).
Thomas a Kempis was an Augustinian canon, mystic and spiritual writer of the 15th century. His four-part work Nachfolge Christi (De imitatione Christi) was for a long time the most widely distributed book after the Bible. A beautiful, small, well-preserved incunabulum in an attractive late Gothic original binding.
ILLUSTRATION
Single-column, Gothic type in 25 lines. At the beginning of the Preface a blue decorative initial with red trim and border ornamentation Several hand-painted lombards in red and blue. Rubricated in red throughout. Some contemporary marginal annotations in brown ink.

BINDING
Original, late Gothic Nuremberg binding. Blind-stamped calfskin over wooden boards on three bindings. The covers with frames of double lines of moulded iron. Two different rosette stamps in the outer edge (Kyriss 114 - five-petalled rose I), numerous small rhombic stamps in the roughened centre field, including the coat of arms of Nuremberg and an unwinged dragon, as in the workshop Kyriss 19 (Nuremberg Augustinian, 2nd group) associated with the former. Spine with floral stamps. Ten brass boss fittings on the lids and two intact clasps with punched fittings. The clasps renewed. Later, fragmentarily preserved handwritten spine label. Very good condition. Cover somewhat rubbed and with minimal leather defects at the edges. The formerly broken front cover has been expertly restored. The front endpapers and the rear flyleaf renewed at a later date. The rear flyleaf with handwritten theological text from the 15th/16th century.
Measurements: 14.5 x 10.5 x 5.7 cm.
CONDITION
Very good, original condition. A copy with wide margins. Completely rubricated. Paper evenly only slightly browned. Only occasional small marginal defects in the right outer margin caused by the clasps. First and last leaves with small wormholes in the wide outer margins. Partially somewhat stained in the margins, type area clean throughout. Some marginal annotations by a contemporary hand in brown ink.
