This is an absolutely gorgeous heavy crystal glass bowl with lead content and a great antique pattern. It comes from an estate sale, is unsigned, and appears to be a combination of quality pressed glass with finely cut actual etching or cutting (most evident in the cross hatching.)

Some of the edges in the pattern feel rounded, such as along the tops of the sawtooth rim, but some are quite sharp and finely etched. So I can't honestly say this piece is 100% American Cut Glass. Possibly a hybrid.

However, the pattern is definitely from American Brilliant Period, dating from 1876-1910. But, I am not an expert and can only describe the item along with some researched information.

The intricate and deeply cut pattern itself alternates between fiery hobstars and stylized strawberries three times around the inside. The geometric hobstar and strawberry were two of the most popular cut glass design motifs in America up until 1910, when non-geometric designs such as flowers, fruit and natural scenes began to appear. They work beautifully together in this lovely bowl.

Of interest is a tiny detail I noticed on the cross hatching. The very tips are finely cut with tiny X's if one looks closely. See photo.

It is 8" in diameter and 3 1/4" deep. The glass is 3/8" thick. It weighs 2 lbs. 14 oz.

It gives a nice sustaining bell ring when struck indicating lead crystal composition. When crystal is tapped, one hears the reverberating singing sound emanating from it, not the dull clunk when tapping glass. It shows very nice clarity with no fogginess.

This bowl sparkles like a diamond in the sunlight. The piece behaves like a prism scattering light into the different colors of the rainbow. I would describe the glass as being brilliant with a high refractive index.

All photos are of the actual item for sale.
