Description: It is an authentic antique print approximately 210 years old, blank on reverse, printed on high cotton rag paper, very typical of the era. It was originally published by Richard Phillips in the The Wonders of the Telescope (London: 1809), a copy of the title page is included. It is being sold as a single loose print that is not mounted, matted nor framed, basically as seen in the main pic. Herschel's telescope was the largest scientific instrument of the time, cast in iron with copper alloy metal mirrors four feet in diameter and weighed 1000 pounds. It was funded by King George in 1785 and took five years to complete, however the images were not as clear as desired. Still it was considered a technological achievement during the period and was the subject of much discussion. Herschel was best know for discovering Uranus which was called planet Herschel until it was officially named Uranus in line with the other planets named after Roman gods.
Condition: It is in Good to Very Good condition for its age with horizontal and 2 vertical folds as issued, binding tab still attached. There are a couple of minor spots and specks, a slight crease on the bottom left corner and a couple of very minor edge tears repaired on reverse with archival materials, see the pics for more on condition. Overall, a very nice and well preserved print that would frame up well. The pics are of the actual print.
