This English three-decked 90-gun ship was built by Phineas Pett in 1637. Dimensions: 127' x 46.6' x 19.4' and tonnage 1522 tons. She was the most powerful ship of her time, and sank a Dutch warship in her first naval engagement with a single broadside. This boat is decorated with topsides overlaid from steam to stern with carvings, paintings and gilded ornamentation. It is believed that the king's favorite artist, Van Dyck, was responsible for the designs. For 60 years she ruled the seas unmatched. Her long career finally came to an end on January 27th, 1696 theSOVEREIGN was entirely destroyed by a fire when shew as anchored in the harbor of Chatham.
