Signed Lalique France

ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL

Lalique's

designs portray an elegant simplicity. This piece is painstakingly hand-crafted in France. The graceful nature of clear crystal sets the stage to showcase the masterful craftsmanship and the intricate designs utilized by Lalique. For more than 100 years, Lalique's Manufacture located in Alsace, an area renowned for its glassmaking, has perpetuated a traditional know-how. The human hand, that of both artist and craftsman, marks every object of its print and its strength, which convey this "material" presence: our know-how. The Lalique style comes from an artistic gesture, outlining a drawing in total osmosis with crystal, a style that one easily recognises through the manual modelling of the shapes and patterns, as if sculptured, the richness of the figurative details, the different types of finishing which creates this characteristic contrast of clear and matt crystal. An identity built by softness, femininity, nature with strong Art nouveau and Art Deco inspirations. Lalique, the only crystal Brand which, through an artistic gesture and the fusion at 1 400 degrees of lead and sand, metamorphoses raw material into unique works of art.

René Lalique became synonymous with French Art Nouveau decorative arts. René Lalique was born in 1860 and first began designing fine jewelry in Paris in 1881. Lalique pursued increasingly more innovative experimentation in glass commencing around 1883. Early works used the familiar "lost wax" technique by which the model is made in wax while a mold is formed around the model. Then, the wax is melted and molten glass is poured into the mold. Lalique glass was made in this manner until approximately 1905 at which time the factory was redesigned for a larger production. As such, the individual uniqueness of each example of Lalique glass came to an end with the end of the one-time only molding technique around wax models. The success of this venture resulted in the opening of his own glassworks at Combs-la-Ville in 1909. During the art nouveau period, Lalique was well known for a wide variety of objects including perfume bottles, vases, inkwells, decorative boxes, and bookends.

Lalique glass is lead based, either mold blown or pressed. Favored motifs during the Art Nouveau period were dancing nymphs, fish, dragonflies, and foliage. Characteristically the glass is crystal in combination with acid-etched relief. In addition to vases, clocks, automobile mascots, stemware, and bottles, many other useful objects were produced. While not well known, Lalique also experimented with bronze and other materials as well.

After training and studying in Paris, France, Lalique began his career as jewelry designer and created the first truly modern pieces in Art Nouveau style. Raising jewelry to the status of fine art, he experimented new techniques and used new prestigious materials, such as glass and enamel, ivory and amber, pearls and semi-precious stones, combined with precious metal to create subtle effects. In 1886, he set up his own workshop in Paris and began a period of intense creativity. In 1890 he made original stage jewelry for the legendary actress Sarah Bernardt. He later presented his works with great success at the 1900 Universal Fair in Paris and at numerous international exhibitions in Europe and America.

It all began with René Lalique (1860-1945), an artist who revolutionised jewellery making and who, as early as 1885, started to create unrivalled Art Nouveau works of art in his own name, before going on to become a master glass-maker in the Art Déco movement.

Lalique's work came at a time of intense artistic activity in France, which can only be compared with the Renaissance period in Italy. There was a very special kind of creative energy at work, which left Paris almost breathless, carried along on a wave of artistic feats and technical innovations.

It was in the midst of these turbulent times that Lalique, guided by his craft and his boundless imagination, started to work on his first pieces of jewellery. What was most important to him was the design, the force of the lines and the strength of contrasts. As a result, he created his first pieces by freeing himself from the boundaries previously imposed by the nature of the materials. He chose materials for their strength, their colour or their texture, regardless of whether they were precious or not, and he drew his artistic inspiration from them. He created artistic pieces, blurring the boundaries between fine jewellery and costume pieces, mixing ornamental stones with gold or ivory and enamel with precious stones.

Made from the finest crystal by Lalique, these VASES combine the use of frosted accents with the beauty of

the clear crystal to make a statement that is recognised the world over for its beauty and quality.
