USS Monitor: this single turret ironclad was able to fight to a draw with the CSS Virginia on 9 March 1962. However, the shallow draft, low powered vessel was only usable in shallow coastal and river areas. She also fought in the James River in an ill-fated attempt to reach Richmond in May 1862. The proud ship sank in bad weather on 31 December 1692 off Cape Hatteras. She did not reach her first birthday!  See the web pages for the details of her design, construction and service history, including battle narratives.
