229th Aviation Regiment - Helicopter Assault

The 229th Aviation Regiment has a rich history during the Vietnam War. Originally constituted as the 229th Aviation Battalion (Combat Assault Helicopter) on July 1, 1966, it was activated on August 25, 1966, in Vietnam. The unit was redesignated as the 229th Aviation Battalion on December 1, 1967, and then as the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion on January 1, 1968.

The 229th Aviation Battalion provided vital support to ground forces, conducting combat assault missions, troop insertions and extractions, resupply missions, and medical evacuations. The unit operated primarily in III Corps Tactical Zone (III CTZ), which included Bien Hoa, a major military base and airfield located northeast of Saigon.

Bien Hoa was a crucial hub for U.S. and allied operations during the Vietnam War. It served as the headquarters for the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division and later the 173rd Airborne Brigade, as well as hosting various aviation units. The 229th Aviation Battalion's "Winged Assault" motto reflects its role in conducting swift and effective air assaults, embodying the unit's commitment to providing rapid and decisive air support to ground forces.

Throughout the war, the 229th Aviation Battalion earned a reputation for its professionalism and bravery in the face of intense combat. The unit's helicopters were a familiar sight in the skies over Vietnam, supporting troops in some of the war's most challenging environments.
