This lot consists of a cover commemorating the Mission Abort of the Apollo 13 space voyage. This cover was machine cancelled at Cape Canaveral on 04/17/1970) shortly after the Splashdown when the astronauts were helicoptered to Hawaii. There,  President Richard M. Nixon presented them with the "Medal of Freedom'.

The 3 astronauts: James Lovell; Fred Haise; John Swigert were on an ill-fated mission from the beginning. Astronaut Mattingly developed measles and was replaced by Swigert- - - - On their way to the moon an explosion occurred on board the space craft which terminated the flight causing them to make an emergency loop around the moon in order to return to earth. Splashdown was in the Pacific Ocean on (04/17/1970) The capsule was recovered by helos from the USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2).
