Fabulous and Rare Primitive Hand-Painted 'Chireh' Afghan Hunter's Cloth Panel.

These traditional cloths, called 'Chireh', were produced on thin linen fabric by individuals in villages in the mountainous regions of Northern Afghanistan. Traditionally these cloths are hand-painted with natural pigments and adorned with stylized animals to be hunted such as big cats, birds, rabbits snakes etc. The cloths are carried by the hunter for good fortune and are used as utility pieces during the hunt with the cloth ultimately being used to wrap the hunt's bounty. This means that most cloths are destroyed through use accounting for their relative scarcity.

This Chireh is in good overall condition with some staining and creasing. The mustard frame color is nice and bright, the traditional red details (cat's tongue, bird's feet) have faded to a rusty color but still look great. There are a couple of small holes.

Most of these are in museums and private collections and this chireh is of that quality. It would look amazing framed in a shadowbox.

The piece measures about 34" wide by 46" tall.

The piece will be shipped rolled to prevent further creasing.
