SILVER TABLE BOX

A large and beautiful Arts & Crafts solid planished silver table box with cedar lining which would make a stunning statement piece on a console or side table in a period Arts & Crafts home. Constructed with sheet silver (lightly planished all over) and assembled with silver rivets, this individual box has strong design elements indicative of a School of Art piece, made during the Arts & Crafts period.

Rarely found with these large proportions and substantial weight, the eye-catching wedge-shaped body comprises of a folded base with separate riveted sections to form the corners and the rails, giving the illusion of panels. The lid has shapely faux hinge straps either side of central convex dome which is arguably a little more raised than the photos suggest.
The box has no maker's name or hallmark which does suggest a one-off piece possibly made in a School of Arts workshop by an individual training in silversmithing and design; this may also explain why it was not assayed. It has been acid tested by myself which shows both the body and lid to be high grade silver (the red spots in the images).

Date: circa 1905.

Condition. Very good functional condition. The silver is in very good condition and has been cleaned recently to a good standard. The interior is in good condition. The body is in very good condition, I would suggest that it has never been dropped as it is free of dings, dents or damage. The lid hinges nicely although the overhang on the front left is slightly more than the right hand side. The underside is not fully polished and is lightly abraded - it is possible that felt was intended to be installed although there is no evidence of this.
