A
distant time, a vanished era. The big, brash, brassy and bold MGM
TECHNICOLOR ® musical. Minnelli explains tricks of the movie trade and
how some special effects were done (which today can be easily mimicked
and surpassed with computer technology). For example, the transition
from darkness to bursting light in the Ziegfeld Follies "Limehouse
Blues" number or how Judy Garland vanishes and is replaced by a stunt
double to ride the horse in the 'Sunny'' number from "Till The Clouds
Roll By". Lavish color, great spectacle were hallmarks of his style.
Minnelli was the master of three strip Technicolor® . Some say he went
too far and his use of color was garish but I love it. In this book, he
is surprisingly open about his life. It is his passages regarding his
marriage to Garland that most interested me. He tried to hold the
marriage together and his deep love and affection for Judy permeates
those passages. There's a funny story (reminiscent of Toto in the Wizard
of Oz) where Minnelli sees for the first time the power of stardom:
Judy Garland's little dog runs away during their honeymoon in New York
City. Distraught, Judy calls the NYPD and FDNY and announces, "This is
JUDY GARLAND! Find my dog!" The whole city of New York is on the look
out of the dog and, indeed, the fire department corners the dog near a
dock. The dog jumps in the water but it gets fished out and returned to
Judy. Minnelli is impressed by that kind of star power. The other
Garland biographers have all, quite obviously, read Minnelli's book
