This rare hand turned and carved batea for Shango Chango in Yoruba Religion, Santeria. I do not know the history and provenance of the item. It looks to be Haitian in origin, but I can not say for sure. There is a symbol carved into the bowl and lid, which may be an artist's mark or a spiritual symbol. This beautiful wood lidded bowl is in good condition. There are spots where it looks like the wood finish has lifted, causing whitish lines and spots. This is most prevalent on the edge and the underside of the lid. Please view all photos. This item, in this size, about 12 inches across, is fairly rare and is unique in its carved decoration.
