Bemelmans generates some real emotion in the conflicts & encounters between his characters, which rise above stereotypical archetypes with the inclusion of some simple details by the master storyteller, & there is impressive suspense as the tale builds toward its action-packed climax, one that is not shy in its bloodletting.
The distinctive sumptuous color illustrations by the author contribute to the off-kilter sense of reality.
Not to be dismissed, The Blue Danube is a valuable & memorable piece of anti-Nazi fiction from one of the many key subversive voices that rose from within the very heart of that terrible regime.
