note:

Bugatti commissioned these pens from Montegrappa to commemorate the Bugatti Type 22 car of the same color. Montegrappa was born as a manufacture of gold nibs for fountain pens, then Industria Pennini Oro e Penne Stilografiche Elmo, then Elmo - Montegrappa s.n.c., and finally Fabbrica Penne Stilografiche Elmo Montegrappa s.r.l.) Manufacturer of fountain pens and other luxury goods such as watches, cufflinks, leather pen holder and fragrances, based in Bassano del Grappa, Italy; founded in 1912 by Edwige Hoffman and Heinrich Helm and initially produced only gold nibs. Initial production of retractable safety pens under the Elmo brand are believed to have begun in the early 1920s; but there are claims that Elmo pens were used during World War I by soldiers, including Ernest Hemingway and John dos Passos, both of whom were ambulance drivers in that war. Alessandro Marzotto and Domenico Manea bought the company in 1925, later renaming it Industria Pennini Oro e Penne Stilografiche Elmo (I.P.O.P.S.E.). Heinrich Helm remained as production manager, providing valuable continuity. Celluloid pens. the first button magazines, and later lever action magazines, appeared c. 1930; the Elmo name remained in use for low-end models, while Montegrappa became the brand name for high-end models. During the 1930s, the company expanded its production, entrusting the pens to many companies, including Atlantica, Caesar, Contessa, Duchessa and Zenith. A Contessa Superpen is shown below. In the latter part of the 1930s piston fillers appeared along with clear sections. As the Second World War approached, the company began producing pens with steel nibs, using materials sourced entirely from Italy. After the war a complete stylistic revival leads to the production of the classic torpedo-shaped models. In 1947 the company was restructured as Elmo – Montegrappa s.n.c., and in 1951 it became Fabbrica Penne Stilografiche Elmo Montegrappa s.r.l., which is its current name. In 2001, Montegrappa was purchased by the Richemont Group, an umbrella organization of luxury goods manufacturers, which in 2009 sold the company to the Aquila family.
