Description:

A magnificent 17+ feet long partial handpainted handscroll from a 18th century Edo period reproduction of the 14th century emakimono depicting The later three-year war (Gosannen war). The Gosannen war took place between 1083 to 1087. And the earliest emakimono recorded the Gosannen war appeared in 14th century. Many later reproduction were made. This particular partial scroll matches the one painted by Imamura Zuigaku Yoshitsugu (died in 1793). Look from left to right, as the story unfolds. There are some abrupt color shifting in the picture of the entire scroll, that was because I have to concatenate multiple sections together. In person, there is no sudden color shifting in the scroll.

The entire Gosannen war emakimono consists of three volumes(or six by some account) and each volume consists of 4 or 5 sections of both picture and text. This partial scroll doesn't have any text, and appears to be the section 2 and 3 of the third volume. Refer to below auction record:

The content of this partial emakimono is the capture and brutal killing of the rebel Takehira and his loyal Chitou, before the war came to an end. The scenes are bloody, but the painting is so vibrant and the composition is beautiful.
