Antique Florentine Pottery Company Chillicothe Ohio Jardiniere Planter 1901-1905
We are pleased to offer this very rare turn-of-the-century antique jardiniere manufactured by the Florentine Pottery Company of Chillicothe, Ohio. Although this company cannot be said to have ever flourished, for a few short years between 1901 and 1905 when it was in operation, it did produce a variety of art pottery that clearly is equal in quality to that of such contemporaries as Weller, Roseville, and Owens. Unfortunately, products of this short-lived art pottery venture are rare, even more rarely are they marked, and there is little known documentation of this unsuccessful pottery venture. It is known that they exhibited as part of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in St. Louis, in 1904.
This same pot is pictured in an article written by James L Murphy in "The Journal of the American Art Pottery Association, v. 15, n. 1, p. 19-21,1999". Also pictured there are bisque & glazed sherds from a matching jard dug at the Florentine waster dump.
This jard features a blended glaze done in saturated cobalt blue & beige with in-mold embossed designs including scrolls. It is numbered on the bottom - hard to read. It has overall crazing from age (at least 119 years old). The interior could use a cleaning. Just a very rare piece of Art Nouveau Art Pottery that you are sure to want to add to your collection - especially if you have ties to the Chillicothe, Ohio area or are a collector interested in rare pieces of American Art Pottery history.
