Repair Instructions for the VOIGTLANDER Prominent I and II Rangefinder Cameras

Compact Disk (CD) containing instructions for the repair of the VOIGTLANDER Prominent I and II rangefinder cameras. The CD also contains pdf files of Voigtlander catalogs and instruction manauals (see below).

Voigtlander Prominent rangefinder cameras are of high-quality construction and are still capable of first-class results. However, many cameras suffer from age-related problems that make them inoperative or keep them from reaching their full potential.  The most frequent problems encountered with the Prominent camera are:
  1. Self-timer was set and got stuck; this keeps the shutter from completing its cycle which blocks the film transport. Self-timer too slow or hesitant.
  2. Slow speeds too slow or shutter even stays open for slow speed settings (less than 1/25 sec).
  3. Shutter blades slow to close (usually due to a thin film of oil on the blades).
  4. Film transport blocked (unrelated to shutter cycle not being completed).
  5. Rangefinder dim or dirty.
  6. Lens not focusing (not responding to the focusing knob).
Problems 1 and 2 require access to the shutter from the front. Problem 3 is best handled by a complete removal of the shutter housing. Problems 4 and 5 require removal of the top hat. Problem 6 is rare, but requires removal of top and shutter to get access to the focusing mechanism.

The repair instructions provide a step-by-step illustrated guide to disassembly, repair, and reassembly of the Prominent I and Prominent II cameras. They have been written for the amateur who has a limited amount of experience in camera repair. In addition, the instructions are of great interest to the Prominent collector who just wants to learn about the technology of the Prominent camera.

The instructions cover the following topics:
  • Top Removal
  • Access to Shutter Front
  • Synchro-Compur Shutter Removal
  • Synchro-Compur Shutter Reassembly and Adjustment
  • Focusing Mechanism Removal and Adjustments
  • Camera Assembly and Adjustments
  • Special Tools

Note that the Synchro-Compur shutter used in the Prominent is also used in the Vito III and the Bessa I and II cameras.

The repair instructions make good use of modern technology. The text has been written in html, so it can be viewed with a standard web browser (if you can look at this eBay auction, you can also view the repair instructions). Each major step is illustrated with a desktop-size high-resolution image, with the important components marked in the image.

The author is a long-time collector of Voigtlander cameras who has brought a large number of Prominent cameras back to life. In addition to the repair instructions, the CD contains information on the Prominent camera system and the instruction manuals for the Prominent I and II in Adobe pdf format.

The data files on the CD occupy 72 MegaBytes (197 files in 12 folders).  The text and the images can be viewed and printed out on any computer.  In addition, the CD contains high-quality pdf files with
