Here is a terrific lot from a nice Pan American Exposition collection that I have on eBay right now!

This were just over 200 souvenir stamps issued to promote the 1901 World's Fair in Buffalo, New York, and 86 of them are associated with a philatelic charlatan named William B. Hale.

:William B. Hale was a traveling stamp dealer in the 1890's and early 1900's, and he met a man in France in 1900 who produced this stamp and 85 others similar to this one. Alfred Baguet was the Paris printer for 82 of the stamps, and he put "William B. Hale, Williamsville, Mass." (or a variation of it with "Stamp Merchant) along the bottom of all of his varieties. The other four were supposedly made in America, yet further information about the origin of those has not surfaced.

The story goes that Mr. Hale stiffed Mr. Baguet; he never paid the bill for the printing of the stamps. So, Baguet did what he could to recoup his investment of time and materials, and nearly all of the 82 Baguet-related William B. Hale stamps were sold in France, Belgium England, and India. Which makes locating many of these quite difficult! In fact, I have been collecting these stamps for 52 years, since 1968, and have only put together ONE complete set of ALL 86 varieties in that time! Some are more common than others, yet certain color variations and single color stamps and ones with "metallic-like" frames (metallic green, bronze, silver or gold) are EXTREMELY RARE! You'll receive the item listed in the title (mint, small hinge remnant; a nice pair); the number of the stamp is from the extensive Appendix in the back of the book Buffalo Cinderellas". Finally, check out my other eBay listings, as I have several other William B. Hale Pan American Exposition stamps, and a variety of Pan Am collectibles.

Also, if you're a fan or collector of the Pan American Exposition, you will certainly enjoy the fantastic award wining book Buffalo Cinderellas! This terrific publication, which won an American Philatelic Society 2018 gold medal award, contains the fascinating stories of the two men who are most associated with souvenir stamps issued for the 1901 Pan American Exposition.

A marvelous deluxe publication, Buffalo Cinderellas is an unparalleled, extremely detailed, fully illustrated hardcover with over 400 images, over half of which are in vivid color! The book is an invaluable asset to those who collect these treasures, and you can find it in my eBay Store right now; there are a few Standard Classic Edition books still available at this time!

Background: The electrifying 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York offered a spirited message of hope and possibility. Over eight million people flocked to the spectacular Pan Am, and there were substantial opportunities for businessmen to profit.

Two very different people did so by creating souvenir cinderella stamps for the event. One was a reputable man who sold over four million Expo stamps and became a respected philatelic expert; the other was a traveling charlatan who later drifted into the darkness of forgery and swindling.

Their riviting stories and adventures jump off the pages. And the items they created, that are an ever increasing attraction to stamp collectors and lovers of intrigue alike, are  beautifully pictured and precisely detailed inside the book too!
