GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a NINETEENTH CENTURY hardback edition entitled “Secret History of the Court of England, from the Accession of George the Third to the Death of George the Fourth; Including Among Other Important Matters, Full Particulars of the Mysterious Death of the Princess Charlotte and the Murder of the Duke of Cumberland’s Valet, Sellis,” by the Right Honourable Lady Anne Hamilton, sister of His Grace the present Duke of Hamilton and Brandon, and of the Countess of Dunmore.

It was published by Reynold’s Newspaper Office of The Strand, London in circa 1876, and is complete in one volume (there is a statement at the top of the title page that this is a faithful reprint of the original work that “made its first appearance forty-four years ago”) reprint of the edition originally published by William Henry Stevenson, of London, in 1832.

Lady Anne Hamilton (1766–1846) was a courtier and friend of the British queen Caroline of Brunswick.  “Secret history of the Court of England from the accession of George” was first published in 1832 and was attributed to "Lady Anne Hamilton".  It was however a forgery - Lady Anne disclaimed any connection with the publication - and is believed to have been written by a woman who had gained Hamilton's confidence, the strong suspect for this role is Olivia Serres (born Wilmot). The resulting scandal meant that the publisher had to flee to avoid prosecution and Hamilton had to spend some time in France.

The book measures 7.75 inches x 5.25 inches and has 374 pages, which are hand-cut to the top and side rims.

The book is in good, neat condition for its age, with minor wear/bumps and is a little grubby/blemished to the original embossed decorative cloth hardback cover, with a little light foxing near the covers. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages.  There is no dust-jacket.

A wonderful NINETEENTH CENTURY edition.
