History Of The Sandcast CB750
Introduced in 1969, Honda’s CB750 SOHC inline-4 was a groundbreaking motorcycle as the first mass-produced, 4-cylinder motorcycle with cutting-edge features such as an electric starter, front disc brake and a top speed revving past 120 MPH. This bike is among the initial batch of those first year CB750s, signified by its sandcast engine. As a sandcast model, this bike is one of about 7,400, and the frame number puts it at #1185. This distinction from the diecast models later in the 1969 production run makes the early 1969 CB750s highly sought after by collectors. Not only that, but this CB750 Sandcast has had only 5 miles put on it since it was professionally restored by Local CB750 expert Justin Harris.
This pristine example of a sandcast CB750 features the Blue tank with gold stripes, as well as matching headlight nacelle and side covers above brightly polished fenders, spoked wheels and the original four-into-four exhaust.
This early Honda four is, according to its engine number, a rare early “Sandcast” version of the immortal CB750, one of the earliest of this world-changing motorcycle design, manufactured before August 1969. The engine cases of these early machines were not actually cast in sand; they were in fact gravity cast in steel molds, which is called permanent mold casting. Because the aluminum is poured into the steel molds using gravity, their surfaces are rough—about the same texture as 600-grit sandpaper, although not as sharp, which results from micro-deformities caused by molten aluminum meeting the cooler steel mold walls. After the first 7,414 CB750s were built, the factory felt confident enough in its new model to invest in new molds for die-casting, in which the aluminum is pressure-forced into the casting dies, creating a very smooth surface. The difference is distinctive and caused confusion for many years, that is, until enough information had been gathered by enthusiastic fans and the factory to establish definitive landmarks in the CB750s production timeline. To sum it up, a CB750 with an engine number of CB750E-1007414 or lower is an early “Sandcast,” the very first production or prototype versions of this remarkable new motorcycle design. One other detail that’s difficult to notice, the clutch cover on this early machine is held on by 10 screws while the die-cast engines use 11 for less stress on each screw and a flatter, more oil-tight clutch cover. This is one example of around 100 differences of many small details that changed between early prototypes, pre-production bikes and full production CB750s, which are the meat and potato of “spotters” obsessed with rubber boots on clutch cables and the shape of the banjo fitting on the brake master cylinder. This impressive 1969 Honda CB750K0 is a genuine early “Sandcast” model that appears virtually as new, and for good reason. It was restored by Kaplan Cycles who has restored over 7,500 motorcycles including most of the bikes on display today at The New England Motorcycle Museum, Justin Harris was the Lead Tech on this restoration and is our local expert on early CB750s, it’s a great example of a “Sandcast” CB750.

Hello, I wanted to provide some information for posterity as it looks like I sold the old girl and a future owner may find the information useful.
Dad bought the bike from Stan Neville Honda (long defunct) in Pennsylvania in 1971 as a demo bike. I believe the mileage was about 1000 at the time of purchase. I don't remember the exact mileage as it's not listed on my copy of the original title. I was 11 and do remember trying to hold on.
I have had the bike in my possession since the mid 1980s. It was ridden to odometer reading 5950 in June 1998. At that time it was legally transferred into my name (from Mom's name) and as of October 2023 has 6714 miles.
A bit of trivia, when Dad bought the bike he was often "driver's license challenged" and bought the bike to conceal his identity from the local constables who controlled traffic manually during rush hour back in the day. They all knew each other, belonging to the local Lion's Club.
An excellent bike to not attract attention. I remember you could feel the thing coming.
To obtain insurance and registration Dad had titled the beast in Mom's name, as she held a valid driver's license. I don't know how they kept a straight face with that one. I remember how her attempt a ride a mini-bike with a lawnmower engine ended.
When they divorced Dad had the bike and Mom had the title. Only one person could end up with both; and he's writing this!
