This sale is for a vintage edition entitled “The Moules and Thomas Hardy,” by Lois Deacon, with an Introduction by Canon Edward B. Brooks, Vicar of Fordington St. George, Dorset and 3 photographic illustrations.

 

It was published by The Toucan Press, of Mount Durand, St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands, in 1968 and is Number 47 of the wonderful little vintage “Monographs on the Life, Times and Works of Thomas Hardy,” edited by J. Stevens Cox, F.S.A.

 

The booklet measures 7.25 inches x 4.6 inches and the page numbers run from 117 to 139.

 

Henry Moule (1801–1880) was a priest in the Church of England and inventor of the dry earth toilet, a type of pail closet.  He had eight sone, two of whom were friends with Thomas Hardy.

 

The oldest, Henry Joseph Moule (1825–1904) watercolour artist, was a friend for some 50 years, and a younger brother, Horatio Mosley Moule (1832–1873) was another, but who committed suicide aged 41, to whom Hardy dedicated poems, and based characters on in the novels Jude the Obscure and A Pair of Blue Eyes.

 

The booklet is in good used but generally neat condition for a softback of its age, save the off bump/light crease.  There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the booklet. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages.

 

A good copy of this little illustrated vintage edition.
