ARTIST: Louis Napoleon Jensen is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions multiple times, including famous auction houses such as Bruun Rasmussen, Christie’s. He was an exhibitor at the famous Charlottenborg. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. He went on study trips to Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, France, Finland and Russia. He was a part of a community of artists called “Egernsundmalerne” (Egernsund is a scenic and historical area in the Southernmost part of Jutland). His paintings from his European trips are often landscape or cityscape scenes and a few portraits, whereas his paintings from Denmark are often landscape or coastal scenes. Today quite a few of his paintings can be seen in various Danish art museums.

PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a beautiful rendering of a stretch of coast with a steamer boat in the far-away distance. Patches of grass create patterns along the sandy beach. To me the painting has a really appealing composition and use of light. The location of the scene could very well be Egernsund, but there’s no inscription to safely verify that. The painting is dated in the lower left corner to 27th of July(“Juli” in Danish) 1896. Signed: “Louis Jensen 96” in the lower right corner.

SIZE: With frame: 48,5 cm/19.1" * 40 cm/15.7". Without frame: 32 cm/12.6" * 23,5 cm/9.3".

CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has scratches and stains.
