FOREWORD
The original format for this book was on crashed aircraft 1939-1945, but so great has been the response from people who can still remember events during that period, that the book has developed into one on Air Warfare in Lincolnshire, 1939-1945.
I think the idea to write a book on crashed wartime aircraft in Lincolnshire, came to me one day when my wife came home with the remains of a Wellington elevator someone had given her. Therefore since June, 1971, I have travelled hundreds of miles along the length and breadth of Lincolnshire, which is the second largest County, visiting and talking to people about their experiences of crashes. I have visited scores of wartime crash sites, where the aircraft and crew (in many cases) came to their last resting place.
To carry out my search, I divided the County into four parts, and covered each part in turn, until I built up a picture of a period in Lincolnshire history, which I believe should be recorded.
In addition, I have written many letters to Government Departments, both at home and abroad, seeking information.
My own contribution to this period, was for thirteen months, July, 1941 to August, 1942, when I served on 'A' Flight, No. 103 Squadron, Elsham Wolds.
