This sale is for a vintage edition entitled “Porcelain Through the Ages,” by George Savage, with 64 pages of photographic illustrations and 12 figures in the text.

It was published by Penguin Books Ltd., of Harmondsworth, Middlesex, in 1963 and is the Second Edition (the FIRST EDITION was published in 1954).

In this volume the author traces the art and history of porcelain from its beginnings in China more than twelve hundred years ago, through its European apotheosis in the 18^th century, to its emergence as a factory made product in the 19^th and 20^th centuries.

He discusses a number of aspects, including the numerous existing forgeries and reproductions of valuable porcelain, and the better-known methods of identifying the factory origin and the artist responsible.  It also provides a list of some of the more common marks in an appendix, and is illustrated with 64 plates of important specimens.

The book measures 7.1 inches x 4.25 inches x 0.8 inches and has 348 pages + photographic illustrations. 

The book is in good generally neat condition for a softback of its age, save a stain to page 28-29 of the photographic section, and wear and a creased bottom corner of the rear cover. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good, with light creasing along the spine, and no loose or missing pages.

A good copy of this wonderfully illustrated vintage edition.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs.  However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the World). 

These costs are a direct result of: 

• An increase of more than 100% in the fees the US Postal Service (USPS) charges for the delivery of international mail.

• Securing air freight at inflated market costs due to a 95% reduction in air passenger flights globally. This has not affected domestic or postage within the EU.

“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”

If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.
