Classic Americana Historical Vintage Book -

..     PREFACE:    Travelers in general love to air their views. A growing number of them rush into print and inflict privately circulated volumes on their indulgent friends. I plead guilty. I know, however, that I have a sincere desire to share my experiences with those who are closest to me and to give them the reactions of a business mind on scenes that are pictured ordinarily only by professional writers.

If any outside our Purina Family should read these letters, please remember this does not pretend to be a book, but just a series of sketchy notes written at random as I traveled and then mailed home to my business associates.

In my ramblings I made some surprising discoveries. For instance, I previously knew nothing of the hundreds of native states in India. In discovering them I experienced all the thrills of Mark Twain's "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court." I discovered the overwhelming hospitality of the native Indian-princes, officials and private citizens. I met many of those Englishmen on whose shoulders rests the responsibility of governing India, and in them I discovered as levelheaded a group of executives as can be found anywhere in the world. I wish space permitted me to name and thank the host of new friends, both Indian and English, who were so good to us during our visit. My eyes were opened to some of India's unsolved problems. We in America have but a hazy idea of the complex knots to be untied by those who are guiding India's destinies. Then I discovered India itself, so tremendously more fascinating at close range than I had anticipated

India, with its seething masses, its searching philosophy, its amazing colors and contrasts, its magnificent distances, its “head in the snows and feet on the equator.”

All of these discoveries present to me a challenge to push back my horizon, to enlarge my vision and my philosophy, and to be a better solver of problems myself. If these letters can pass on to you some of that same urge, if they can give you a better appreciation of India and the Indians, then they will have been worthwhile.

To the other members of the party that accompanied me, I want to offer my grateful appreciation for help on these letters. Through the collaboration of Gordon M. Philpott, these notes have been given continuity and many illuminating touches which I otherwise would have omitted. I am grateful to him more than I can express. To Mrs. Danforth and Mrs. Walker Buckner I am indebted for the feminine touch and the portions unprinted which they so wisely deleted.
