This sale is for a
VICTORIAN hardback edition entitled “Fifty
‘Bab’ Ballads,” subtitled “Much Sound and Little Sense,” by W. S. Gilbert, with illustrations.
It was published
by George Routledge and Sons, of London, in 1887, and is a Victorian small
pocket-sized volume.
W. S. Gilbert
wrote a large number of ballads using his pen-name ‘Bab’ for the
magazine ‘Fun’ and these became famous in their own right, as well as
being a source for the plots and songs in the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. Although the ballads are essentially English,
nothing like them has ever been produced in the English language. They contain both nonsense and satire, and a lot
of absurdity. However, they were very
well received, and were read aloud at public banquets, private dinner-parties,
and even the House of Lords!

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices
from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs. However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically
changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their
control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels
being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the
World).
These costs are a direct result of:
“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best
value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are
significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view
of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”
If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in
the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement
Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.
Unwinsbooks always
obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail. Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be
sent by courier (customer will be informed).
Goods will be WELL PACKAGED by Unwins Books
and dispatched once payment has cleared.
