This sale is for a large size vintage hardback FIRST EDITION entitled “Elizabeth,” subtitled “The Author of Elizabeth and Her German Garden,” by Karen Usborne, with 39 vintage numerous photographic illustrations including numerous of Elizabeth von Arnim, her family members, friends and associates, including Bertrand Russell, E. M. Forster, Hugh Walpole, H. G. Wells, Francis 2^nd Earl Russell (older brother of Bertrand), Katherine Mansfield, Rudyard Kipling, and a full-page photograph of charcoal portrait of Elizabeth von Arnim, 1923 by John Singer Sargeant as also featured on the dust-jacket.

 

It was published by The Bodley Head, of London, and is the 1986 FIRST EDITION (stated).

 

Elizabeth von Arnim (1866–1941), was an English novelist and a cousin of Katherine Mansfield. Born in Australia, in 1891 she married a German aristocrat, and her earliest works are set in Germany, starting with her anonymously published satirical and semi-autobiographical Elizabeth and Her German Garden (1898).  It chronicled the protagonist Elizabeth's struggles to create a garden on the family estate and her attempts to integrate into German aristocratic Junker society. 

 

Loose with the book is a press review of the book at the time “Not even likeable” by Valerie Shaw.

 

The book measures 9.5 inches x 6.5 inches x 1.25 inches and has 341 pages + illustrations. 

 

The book is in good, neat condition for its age, with slight fading to the spine of the otherwise similarly very good original dust-jacket (not even price-clipped – it cost £15.00 net at the time – 38 years ago!) There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book.  The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages.
