The American Gold Eagle coin series was first introduced in 1986. Since then, coins in this collection have been considered the official gold bullion coin for the U.S., and different versions of these precious metal coins have been offered every year with different designs. Each coin has been authorized by Congress under the American Eagle Bullion Program so that investors can conveniently purchase these bullion products. The surging demand of the 1999 coin is specifically attributed to the growing uncertainty surrounding the approach of Y2K.

The obverse design of the 1999 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle Coin, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, features the image of Lady Liberty striding forward. In one hand she holds a torch while an olive branch is held in the other hand. Behind Lady Liberty are multiple sun rays and a ring of stars around the edges of the coin. The obverse of the 1999 coin also shows the coin’s release year and the inscription “LIBERTY”.

On the reverse of the 1999 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle Coin is the image of a group of eagles designed by Miley Busiek. A male eagle is seen bringing an olive branch to a nest where a female eagle sits with her hatchlings.
