ARTIST: Carl
William Petersen is a well-listed Danish artist, who was born in Zealand in
1882. Petersen was a student at the famous Zahrtmann’s school from 1903-1908. He
had some of his works exhibited at the famous Charlottenborg. Although he
painted a few other genres, landscapes were his favored scene – and especially around
Odsherred and the Northern coast of Zealand. He is often confused with Carl
Ludvig Petersen (1866-1930), even though they have different signatures.
PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is an appealing rendering of a small creek running through a forest in which fallen leaves and small bushes grace the landscape with the colors of Autumn. Slender trees point their naked branches towards the sky. I particularly like the reflection of the trees in the small creek. I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1920-1935. Signed: “Carl Petersen” in the lower right corner.
