ARTIST: Arthur Nielsen is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions (f.ex. Christie’s and Bruun Rasmussen) multiple times and who was a regular exhibitor at the famous Charlottenborg. He was a member of 2 communities of artists – “Dyrehavens malere(painters of Dyrehaven, which is a scenic area north of Copenhagen) and “Nymindegabmalerne”(Nymindegab is an area in the western part of Jutland, which artists revered because of the special light, which occurred here during summer). He was a private student of Heinrich Dohm’s from 1909-1911 and embarked on study trips to Italy, Germany and Austria. He favors landscape scenes – occasionally with houses in them.

PAINTING: Oil on board. The painting is an impressionistic rendering of the narrow strait, Guldborgsund, which separates the islands of Lolland and Falster. Historically the strait was an important sailing route. In 1934, a bridge, “Guldborgsundbroen” was built to carry traffic across the strait. The painting offers a view across the strait with rocks and wind blown poplar trees in the foreground. There’s a small plaquette with the artist’s name on the front of the frame. On the back of the frame there’s a written inscription, which dates the painting to 1921 along with an old piece of paper with additional information about the artist. Signed: “Arthur Nielsen” in the lower right corner.
