#2497 of the proud airship by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS.

Cover with a DIY matte and 5x7 frame, makes a fine gift!

Goodyear M-Class Blimp: This 310 foot Navy airship was built by Goodyear Aircraft Corp.

It was the largest USN blimp type lighter than air craft used by the naval forces.

After the C-Class, and K-Class Goodyear was asked to design an airship that

could perform well in hot climates. With the larger air-bag the lift could be increased.

The Navy used helium even before the Hindenburg disaster.

The airship program continued into the 1930s but most of the craft were not practical

for recon efforts especially in bad weather. The first of the four M-Class were flown in 1944 and

they served until 1956. See the web pages for the details of their design, construction

and service histories.

Cover franked with 4 cent Naval Aviation stamp # 1185 and a 63 cent flag stamp # 5788 (FDOI).
