Gilpin School named for Colorado’s Territorial Governor before it become a state. Built in 1881 on 29th Street at Stout by legendary school architect Robert Roeschlaub. Like Whittier, it was expanded to a growing Northeast Denver kid population that served up to the 9th grade. Wings added in 1892, 1897 and 1921. Old Gilpin was torn down in 1951 and the newer building still resides on the 30th Street side. Gilpin Elementary was closed several years ago and replaced by a charter school no longer serving the neighborhood.
