Up for auction are three (3) antique dinner plates, likely made somewhere between 1912 and 1919, from New York State's Onondaga Pottery / Syracuse China in the Tudor Rose pattern, a beautiful Arts and Crafts / Art Nouveau / Mission-style design of stylized Glasgow School-style roses in green and gold on a white ground.

The three identical bowls all have a diameter of 9-1/2 inches.

On the undersides of all three plates is a stamp in dark green reading:

O.P. CO.

SYRACUSE

CHINA

There are slashes of green here and there on at least one piece and some illegible numbers may be blind embossed on one or more piece.

I'll mention here that this lovely pattern, which I believe was made from 1912 through 1919, was featured in the showroom of Gustav Stickley, renowned for his Arts and Crafts furniture, and as it has been described, it epitomizes the Arts and Crafts aesthetic, with more than a passing nod to the designs of the great Scottish architect / designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928). Also of interest is the fact that pieces of the china were used by Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and the naturalist John Burroughs on a series of camping trips they took between 1916 and 1924. As is stated on the website of the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan: "These self-proclaimed Vagabonds loved to explore nature and the pre-industrial landscape, but they also camped in style. This group of well-to-do adventurers brought along service staff and all needed amenities including a set of [this] durable, Arts and Crafts-patterned china," which was created by the Onondaga Pottery Company in Syracuse, New York (the "O.P." stamped on the underside of the saucers).

I'm not going to go into much more detail on this lovely pattern made in the early 20th century by Syracuse China, but I will mention that late-20th / early 21st-century reproductions of the china have been produced by for Dalton's American Decorative Arts in Syracuse, New York, and are available on their website for prices ranging from $16 for a 7-oz. coffee / tea cup and saucer to $145 for a five-piece place setting. Incidentally, the back stamp of these pieces on Dalton's website reads "TUDOR ROSE / REPRODUCED ESPECIALLY FOR / DALTON'S ANTIQUES," in a green Celtic-style font, with "HOMER LAUGHLIN CHINA / LEAD FREE / U.S.A. / Pristine" printed in black (along with what looks like "55C").

I will include this interesting information on Onondaga Pottery / Syracuse Pottery, which I found on the website of the Onondaga Historical Association:

On January 21st, 1966, the Onondaga Pottery Company officially changed its name to the Syracuse China Corporation. The company’s president, William Salisbury, announced that the change had been made because of "the broad national and international identification of the product name with the company." The Onondaga Pottery Company was organized in 1871 and initially only made earthenware.

However, after James Pass joined the organization in 1885, he soon developed a new type of translucent chinaware which came to be known as "Syracuse China."

The Onondaga Pottery Company began producing the first American-made vitreous china in the early 1890s, and by 1895 the name "Syracuse China" appeared in the back-stamp. Syracuse China would come to be used in hotels, clubs, airplanes, trains, cruise ships, and restaurants around the world.

The overall condition of these three antique plates is good to very good, given their age and the inherent fragility of the material of which they're made. There are no cracks or chips I could see or feel on the pieces, nor any breaks, repairs, crazing, etc. There is some minor brown spotting and smudging here and there on the white surface of the plates, which is difficult to see in the photos. As well, some of the applied color on pieces, especially the thin green lines on and near the rims and edges, may be rubbed off a bit in places. The undersides have some minor flaws in the form of raised bits, gouges, etc. (all of these appear to be original to the pieces, not later occurrences or damage). Note that I did not attempt to clean the plates -- I'll leave that up to the proud new owner! And I don't think I have to tell you (but I will) that I would NEVER put these pieces in a dishwasher, even though they have no gold or silver decoration on them.

Please note that the final photo, showing a measuring tape over a plate, is there for information only, as I'm not sure that plate is one of the three selling in this lot.

These three handsome and well-preserved Tudor Rose dinner plates are being sold AS IS, AS DESCRIBED ABOVE AND PICTURED WITHIN. I am setting what I feel is a reasonable starting price for the auction, and there is NO RESERVE. I am not including a Buy It Now price.
