THE HEALING OF THE LEPER

( Luke V, Mark 1 etc). Plate number 26 top right corner

Original copper plate engraving 1593 by ADRIAEN COLLAERT (Flemish School, 1555-c.1623)

Signed at bottom right corner

Lovely, very busy scene here, with Christ stooping to bless the leper in the centre foreground. In the distance, Mount Thabor, with the disciples and Christ gathered, to the left a townscape (Capharneum?) and to the right a large crowd of people waiting and looking on.

CONDITION/TECHNICAL: Good condition, platemark intact and good borders beyond. Printed on thin "laid" paper. Paper is browning a little due to age and atmospherics. A fairly lighly inked example, all of the detail clear.  See my final photo on the lightbox. Lovely quality work by Collaert, master Flemish engraver.

The item comes from the 1607 Moretus edition of the "Evangelicae Historiae Imagines"  of Hieronymus Natalis (Nadal), an important Jesuit Counter-Reformation treatise first published in 1593. Plate number 91 at top right corner.

* Collaert only contributed a few plates to this work, so becoming scarce. Sheet measures 23 centimetres high x 14.5 cms wide

This fine series, which features engravings by Hieronymus Wierix, his brothers Anton and Jan, Karel Van Mallery and Adriaen Collaert features in virtually every Print Museum collection.
