‘Perplex’ 18x binoculars - Carl Schütz, Cassel

The Carl Schütz company, founded soon after 1900, produced high quality military and civilian binoculars as well as other scientific instruments. The company were based in Cassel, Gemany (old spelling until 1926), and in 1912 changed their name to Optische Werke AG. This particular 18x set are only inscribed Carl Schütz & Co., Cassel, so date prior to 1912. The 18x magnification model is the most desirable and rarest of the Perplex range produced at that time. This set are in well used, but good, undamaged, condition. Much of the original paint is worn. The leather covering is also worn but has no tears or pieces missing. The central focusing is free but tight due to lack of use. The dioptre adjustment and hinge are also tight. The eye cups are very good replacements. The lenses and prisms are undamaged, clean, and clear. The binoculars are fitted with a usable leather neck strap. The top bridge is stamped underneath with a figure 3 on both sides.
