Up for sale is a very scarce set of two leather bound books titled "The Algerine Captive: Or, the
Life and Adventures of Doctor Updike Underhill, Six Years a Prisoner Among
The Algereines", Volume 1 and Volume Two by Royal Taylor.

"One of the first novels printed in the United States. Originally published in 1797, this
fictional story by Royall Tyler (1757-1826) documents a Bostonian’s life in the United States
and abroad, culminating in his six-year imprisonment in Algeria. A popular novel at the time
of its release, it was one of the first American works reprinted in Britain."

Printed by David Carlisle, 1797, First Edition.

455 pages in length between the two volumes, each is 3 3/4" by 6" in size.

Original full leather binding, with gold stamping on spine.

They are NOT complete. Volume 1: marginal chipping to pp 33-34 and 45-46 with no loss text,
pages 55 and 56 are lacking. Volume 2: chipping to margin of 23-24 with no loss of text,
top half of pp 41-42 is lacking, tear in pp 43-44, chipping at the bottom  of pp 47-48 with the loss
of some text, tear in pp 75-76.

What is present is in good condition, with rub wear to the edges, corners and spines, inner
hinges are cracked, but binding is firm, There is a gift presentation inscription on the front paste down
in each volume, no other markings. Some foxing throughout the two volumes.

This is a very scarce copy of the 1797 First Edition, My internet search could not find another copy
of the first edition for sell and this time.
