Original handwritten Starr County, Texas cattle brand and marks registration document in Spanish, signed by Toribio Garcia on Sept. 15, 1874. In the center are hand-drawn illustrations showing the ear marks and cattle brands for a Hispanic man and his three hermanos (brothers).  One name is mentioned in the opening paragraph, Jose Maria Garcia Villareal (or Villarreal). The brand designs are very ornate and reminiscent of the 1700-1800s Spanish/Mexican cattle brands. The paragraph below the illustrations mentions the Ranchos del Lucero, west of Matamoras, Mexico, and Buenavista, southwest of Piedras Negras, Mexico, and is followed by the names of two men, Juan Jose Tijerina and Santos Dimas, Rancho de Buenavista, Texas. My research indicates there were two ranchos along the Mexican border with Texas in the State of Nuevo Leon. I could not find a Rancho de Buenavista for that strip of Texas. In the 1880 census for Texas, 55-year-old Jose de los Santos Dimas, with wife Laranza, was found listed as a servant, Starr County; 26-year-old Jose Tijerina was found as a herder, Hidalgo County; and Jose Ma. Villareal, age 45, was a Sheriff at Rancho Ballenia in Zapata County. We cannot verify that the three men in the census records are the three men in the brand document. In addition, we found that a Jose Maria Villareal served with the Reconstruction Texas State Police in Brownsville from October 1872 to February 1873; this may be the Jose Maria Garcia Villareal mentioned in this document. Please plan on doing your own research. From an estate sale in San Antonio, Texas, this document represents a rare find, especially for Spanish, Mexican, and/or Hispanic cattle brand records, and also for its use during a turbulent time, the 1870s, along the Texas/Mexico border, when the theft of cattle was rampant on both sides of the border and/or Rio Grande. Folded into thirds, the document is stained along the folds, has small tears around the edges, especially at the folds, and other light to moderate discoloration & creasing. Please see scans.
