Here's a rare original W & S COUGH DROPS embossed store counter display jar from the 1880s which sat on the counter of a drugstore or general store full of medicinal cough drops....W & S COUGH DROPS boldly embossed twice around the top of glass lid in large raised letters....Jar and original matching lid have diamond pattern bands embossed around them...Also diamond pattern on bottom of base and on finial knob of lid.....Jar measures 3 5/8"tall (7 1/4"tall with lid)....7 3/4"across base....clear....Sparkling attic near mint condition with no chips, dings or damage of any kind to base or lid. Shiny clean with no haze. Guaranteed original...the glass glows brightly under blacklight indicating the presence of manganese in the glass, which was not used after 1918 or so. The W&S stands for Wood & Selick of New York. Charles Wood and Charles H.Selick formed a partnership in 1880. Wood & Selick primarily sold bakery and candy making supplies, but the W&S Cough Drops also became a large seller in the United States. In 1880 Wood & Selick had their sales rooms, factory & offices located at No.39 Jay Street in New York City. An advertisement for W&S Cough Drops in the 1888 book "Illustrated New York" is as follows: "They have a most excellent effect and purify the blood, and are recommended and prescribed by eminent physicians for coughs, colds, etc and particular for all bronchial and throat diseases".
