Smith played 2 games in 1984 for the Yankees and then he played 4 games 1985 for the Yankees. After 1985 Smith never reached MLB level again in his career. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1979 and made his MLB Debut on April 12th, 1984 and played his finally game in the MLB on October 5th, 1985.

September 15th, 1985 Curtain Call (career highlight):

The highlight of Keith Smith’s career with the New York Yankees came on September 15th, 1985. The Yankees trailed the Cleveland Indians in the 8th inning and Yankees needed a pinch runner. Lou Piniella (third base coach) turned to Billy Martin and said “You got Smitty (Keith Smith)” and Billy just looked at Piniella blankly (Billy wanted Dale Berra to be the pinch runner). Billy did not have much respect or use for rookies. Billy glared at Lou. Then Lou said “He’s our AAA shortstop; he can run” Billy said “Ok” and Billy pointed to Keith Smith and he grabbed his helmet and as Smith reached the field Billy Martin yelled to Keith “Hey!!!” “Don’t get picked off” as Keith Smith is funny to the first base box he hears Billy again yell ”Don’t get fu@%ing get picked off!!” The next batter bunted moving Keith Smith to second base. The next batter hit line drive to left and Keith Smith rounded third and headed to home plate for the only run of his career being safe by two steps.

After scoring his only run in his career Keith hears several drunk fans behind third base yelling “We want Keith – We want Keith.” So Keith went up the steps and tipped his hat. After Keith’s curtain call more fans started yelling for a second curtain call. Keith looks at Willie Randolph who was laughing and Randolph said “Go on” so Keith went back out to the top step of Yankee’s stadium and flipped his cap again. Keith said “Yeah it was pretty funny, a curtain call for pinch running”
