Braves in the 27th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft. Diaz
played college baseball at Michigan State University.
Diaz
grew up in Vancouver, B.C, Canada and played for head coach Jim Chapman
at Handsworth Secondary School. He earned first-team All-Province, as
well as being named the Provincial Pitcher of the Year and the 2016
Provincial MVP. Diaz was named team captain as a junior and senior and
was on the Handsworth Honor Roll. He also played in the summer league
for the Coquitlam Reds, posting a 9-1 record with a 1.24 ERA, firing 104
strikeouts in 73 IP.
Before
starring at MSU, Diaz played two seasons at Iowa Western Community
College for head coach Marc Rardin, earning honorable mention NJCAA
All-American honors as a sophomore. He was also Selected to play on the
United States NJCAA National team in the National Baseball Congress
(NBC) World Series. He also earned Northern All-District accolades and
was named First-Team All-Canadian Pitcher by Canadian Baseball Network.
Diaz helped lead the Reivers to a 54-7 record, winning 36 consecutive
games and the fourth-highest victory total in program history, advancing
to the JUCO World Series as the Northern District D1 Region XI
champions. For his IWCC career, Diaz posted a 14-2 record with a 2.93

Diaz was drafted in the 27th round (817th overall) by the Atlanta
Braves in 2019 (signed for $125,000)
Diaz
established himself firmly as the top relief prospect in the Braves
system during the second half of the 2021 season. The big (6’5, 250),
hard throwing Canadian by way of Michigan State saw his velocity
increase dramatically as he is now able to hit the upper 90s with
consistency. Assuming he continues to develop, he could easily be in the
mix for the New York Yankees major league bullpen during the 2023
season.
In
2021 with Rome, Diaz pitched in 18 games and went 4-1 with a 1.00 ERA.
In 27 innings pitched, he struck out 54! He also added 5 Saves and
registered a 0.67 WHIP. During the season he was promoted to Double AA
Mississippi and was lights out there as well. He pitched in 14 games and
went 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA. He continued his dominance striking out 29 in
18 innings for the Braves. Over parts of three minor league seasons in
the Braves organization (2019, ‘21-22), he has gone 10-6 with nine saves
and a 2.31 ERA (105.0IP, 59H, 31R/27ER, 49BB, 161K, 5HR) in 87 career
relief outings.
Diaz
made his 1st appearance for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic
on March 13th, 2023. He was dominant pitching 1.2 shutout innings
against Team USA with a pair of powerhouse Ks. It was eye-opening
considering the Yankees have a clear and present need for upper-level
pitching depth this season.
