ARTIST: Frederik Drews (1909-1960) is a well-listed Danish artist, who has had several works in exhibitions and sold at auctions. He is the son of another well-listed Danish artist, Kaj Jeppe Drews. As an artist, he is self-taught. He is known for having used several pseudonyms, such as E Schneider, Poul Rönne and Sven Lynge.

PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a pleasing and nicely composed rendering of a rustic, Danish farmhouse interior with an open door. There are many lovely little details, such as the tankard on the table, the green storage chest partially hidden by the door, the flowers in the window and last, but not least – the mangle board hanging on the wall. These boards had a handle in one end, which was often shaped like a horse – which is also the case with this one. They were used for smoothing washed bed linen, tablecloths etc. This interior scene was favored by the artist, and he made many paintings with different variations on the theme. I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1940-1960. Signed: “Poul Rönne” in the lower right corner.
