Il romanzo di Buzzati è una storia semplice e fantastica, scritta nel 1935; una sorta di inno all'infanzia, ricolma di metamorfosi, sortilegi, magiche coincidenze e metafora del rapporto paradossale che l’umanità adulta ha con la Natura.
Protagonista è il colonnello Sebastiano Procolo, che eredita dallo zio parte delle tenute della Valle di Fondo, il cosiddetto "Bosco Vecchio", mentre il resto è stato lasciato al nipote dodicenne di Sebastiano, Benvenuto, che vive in un collegio non lontano da Fondo. Ben presto l'avidità del colonnello lo spingerà a desiderare l'intero bosco per poterne sfruttare appieno le risorse abbattendone gli alberi.
I genii, custodi secolari degli alberi si opporranno alle sue intenzioni e alla fine il colonnello, sconfitto e pentito, accetterà di piegarsi alla segreta sacralità del bosco e delle sue creature. Claudio Carini intepreta magistralmente i numerosi caratteri presenti (i genii, il vento Matteo, la gazza guardiana, ecc.) e con una pacata narrazione ci trasporta nei recessi dell’anima magica del bosco. Il romanzo è diventato anche film ( Ermanno Olmi, 1993) e lo stesso Claudio Carini è il protagonista di una riduzione teatrale per ragazzi che rappresenta in tutta Italia con il teatro stabile di innovazione Fontemaggiore di Perugia.
