cs2048 - A collection Content Management System (CMS) Software Packages

On this CD there are no less tan 74 software packages for web site content management. The features and operational details that one may wish for in a CMS are conditioned by the circumstances as well as the orientation of the prospective users.

Both of these factors are highly variable, and this is the reason that so many developers have elected to write their own software aids to content management. However, it is possible that one of these many packages might be just the thing for you. In any event, this CD will make it much easier and less time consuming to experiment with a number of packages.

You will need one or more of the commonly available utilities to expand compressed archives, such as tar, PKUNZIP or WinZip, etc. Most are distributed as source. Programs may need to be compiled, and have their individual installation procedures.

The various packages are at different levels of maturity and completeness, and I cannot certify that they are all worthwhile for any particular purpose. You will have to judge for yourself, but there is a lot to choose from.

Here are the packages that I have included:

phpWebSite - phpWebSite Content Management System - A program developed by the Web Technology Group at Appalachian State University. All client output is XHTML 1.0 and meets the W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative requirements. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License and the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License. PhpWebSite is written in PHP and runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems, including Mac OS X.
Back-End CMS - A multi-lingual CMS based on the phpSlash code base. Articles, links & photo galleries integrated into a common hierarchy. Content administrators can edit their content through a choice of text, html, wiki or a WYSIWYG editor. Back-End is particularly suitable for advocacy organisations, with a suite of tools that allow you to create and manage polls and petitions, and to interact with your visitors, making it faster and easier for you to respond to issues as they arise, and to organise members activity. Back-End allows even the non-technical to manage any website easily. It is written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and French language users.
TYPO3 - TYPO3 Content Management Framework - A Web CMS written in PHP and MySQL. It's designed to be extended with custom backend modules and frontend libraries for special functionality. It has very powerful integration of image manipulation features. It runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems. It is written in JavaScript and PHP. For English and German language users. Distributed pursuant to the GNU General Public License.
      The author's opinion: "TYPO3 is a very huge and capable system and it cannot be fully learned in a week! TYPO3 will always have a long learning curve for developers. Once mastered, the system will let you do the most complex website and the authors using it will love you for the choice of TYPO3."
phpSlash - A CMS that provides an easy and flexible means to publish websites. It uses full HTML templates, and an Object Oriented Design model. Phpsplash is written in PHP. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. 
phpWebThings - A Powerful, professional application framework, Web Portal, and Content Managenent System. PhpWebThings is designed for ease of use by the webmaster while preserving security. Multiple users can submit comments. PhpWebThings supports 20 languages, and many features. PhpWebThings is written entirely in PHP and requires a Web Server running php 4.1 or higher or later. It also requires MySQL 4.0.15-standard or later of PostgreSQL, though adaptation to other SQL database software should not be difficult.
Mambo - A business-oriented dynamic web content management system, originally developed by Miro International. The developers feel that it is simple and elegant. Mambo is written in PHP and JavaScript. It runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD/Apple Mac OS X systems. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
SSR technology - A Web application development, publishing engine, and Content Management System. It is written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. There is documentation in Russian, English, German, French, and Spanish.
XOOPS - An extensible, Object Oriented, dynamic web content management system written in PHP for use with MySQL database. XOOPS is easy to use, and a tool suitable for for developing small to large dynamic community websites, intra company portals, corporate portals, weblogs and so on. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Pagetool - A content management system that allows people with limited technical skills to contribute to a web site via a web browser while still permitting flexibility to web designers. It was originally developed by Media Jumpstart with the express goal of making a web content management system appropriate for nonprofit organizations. However, it has also been used in a variety of other contexts. The Pagetool project has since been taken over by Dave Guerin.
      The functionality of Pagetool is extended via plugins. Plugins available include a site search, a scheduler program, and complete user, admin and plugin manuals. Pagetool is written in PHP and is distributed under the GNU General Public License. 
Tiki - A powerful multilingual Wiki/CMS/Groupware system. It addresses the following types of information organization: File/Image gallery, Article, Blog, Tracker/Forms, Forum, Poll/Survey & Quiz, Newsletter, Calendar, Drawing, Bookmarks, FAQ, Banner ads, Categories, Spreadsheet, Maps, Workflow, Search, Theme control, WAP, VoiceXML, RSS, LDAP, and Statistics.
      It is written in PHP and Javascript, and uses the AD0db database environment, and is distributed pursuant to the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License. It supports Brazilian Portuguese, Catalan, Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukrainian language users.
N/X 4.0 - A powerful content management system for the web. N/X CMS is focused on delivering content in many powerful ways. Its functions and content-types can be extended with the plugin-interface and a very very powerful API. N/X requires PHP 4.3.0 or later; it may work with earlier versions of PHP, but is not supported. It requires MySQL Version 3.23 or later and Apache Version 1.3 or later. It is written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and German language users.
RUNCMS - A comprehensive content management system, designed for ease of use, speed, & flexibility. It derives from a branch of the E-XooPS project and is written in PHP and PL/SQL. It runs under Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, Linux/BSD/UNIX, and FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD/Apple Mac OS X operating systems, and is distributed pursuant to the GNU General Public License and the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License. The web-based interface is conditioned for PDA users. The distribution includes support for French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, and English.
phpCMS - phpCMS Content Management System - A highly flexible Web Content Management System with complete content/logic separation. It uses a menu and template model, and supports plug-in capability, scripting (even non-PHP), search engine, statistics, e-mail address cloaking, and fast cache. phpCMS is suitable for small private web pages and also for complex professional appearances and high traffic websites including the integration of webservices and external applications. It is written in PHP and runs under Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems. The software is distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and German language users.
Rainbow - RainbowPortal - A content management system (CMS) based on MS IBUYSPY portal. Rainbow allows content authoring to be safely delegated to role-based team members who need little or no knowlege of HTML. Rainbow optionally supports a two-step approval-publish process. Numerous plug-in modules are included in the standard release, including support for an e-store, XML news feeds, Flash, Maps, Newsletter, Surveys, Forums, Document Management, and Custom Lists. Furthermore, the Developer Documentation page includes guidelines for building custom modules. It is written in C# and ASP.NET, and runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP. Available for 29 languages.
eNdonesia Portal - Portal and site/content management software. Runs under MS Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX operating systems. It is written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and Indonesian language user.
Obliquid - A PHP/XML framework for building groupware Web portals. It provides "Lego bricks" that may be composed to build an Internet application. It has multilingual support and themes. Modules include user management, calendar, news, CMS and messaging. 
Nucleus CMS - A CMS for weblogs. It is easy to install, but still offers a high degree of flexibility. It is written in PHP 4 for use with MySQL, and is intended to run on a local server. Nucleus is distributed under the GNU General Public License. It includes a wide variety of modalities and features; you can find "language packs" for many languages.
Plume CMS - A fully functional Content Management System in PHP, and using MySQL. It manages articles, news, file management and all of the general functionalities of a CMS. It is completely accessible and very easy to use. Plume is distributed under the GNU General Public License, the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License, and the Mozilla Public License 1.1. It is written in PHP and JavaScript, and is designed to be used in English, French, Slovak, and Spanish.
Site@School - A CMS specially for primary schools. It features homepages for pupils, intranet for teachers, access management, email alerts and a variety of other modules. It supports many European languages and Japanese. Site@School is written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License
SiteBox - A Content Management System/Web Portal development base. It's modular design allows you to develop a website with the functionality you want. For the non web developers SiteBox also comes pre-packaged with a news web portal. Written in PHP, it runs under Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems. Distributed under the GNU General Public License.
EZAdmin - A content management system written in PHP. EXAdmin is purely object-oriented. It supports themes and is designed for compatibility. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
SACphp - A full-featured, modular, multilingual, and scalable framework/CMS. The focus of SACphp is speed and security. It is written in PHP and PL/SQL, and uses a web interface and/or the X Window System (X11). It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and Spanish language users.
PHPX - A Content Management System written in PHP and JavaScript, designed to be comprehensive, powerful, and highly customizable. PHPX uses a dynamic template design. The core package includes modules for FAQ, polls, and forums, among others. It runs on Linux/BSD/UNIX/FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD/Apple Mac OS X systems. It has a secure mode using SSL. PHPX is distributed pursuant to the GNU General Public License.
Webgenerator-X - A complete php/mysql content management system.. It's an entirely modular web authoring tool based on a brand new cache and template engine. The program focus on low mysql load, fast processing, reliability and multi-user admin. It is writen in JavaScript, PHP, and PL/SQL. Webgenerator-X is distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and French language users.
Lizard Cart CMS - A content management system for people with limited HTML experience. It uses PHP/MySql/Java Script comes complete with a WYSIWYG online editor. Lizard Cart CMS is a data base driven. It has integrated functionality for PayPal IPN, LinkPoint, Worldpay, Authorize.net. There are also means to store encrypted Credit Card data using mcrypt, and SSL. Lizard Cart is distributed under the GNU General Public License. The program runs under UNIX, but should be easily adaptable to any PHP environment.
Jetbox CMS - A Content Management System that is role based with a modular workflow orientation. All content is fully separated form layout. It is implemented with PHPm, Javascript, and MySQL. Older content can be archived. General design templates and images can be used throughout the entire website and are stored centrally. User rights for each part of the website can be controlled. Statistics are available by the minute. Jetbox is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
owx - eAdmin/OWX - A Content Management System developed by Raptus AG/SA, a Swiss company. It is written in Java and has been released under the terms of the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License. It runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX operating systems, including OS X. English, French, German, and Italian.
ezContents - A web content management system based on PHP/MySQL. Features include frames/no-frames rendering; three-levels of menus; granular security; multiple content authors; plug-in modules such as guestbook, news, links, event list; and more. Distributed under the GNU General Public License. For Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish language users.
Segue CM - A collaborative content management system designed for e-learning. Segue was first written under the name ('CoursesDB', then later 'SitesDB') during the summer of 2002 at Middlebury College. It combines the ease of use of course management systems with the flexibility of weblogs for creating various types of sites including course, news, and journal. Segue is based on a publishing model of content delivery which regards faculty not as course managers but as authors and/or editors and students as contributors/collaborators. Segue is browser-centric and relies on hyperlinks to provide both site navigation and organization. Built into its interface is a customizable three level navigational structure. Content is completely separated from form. Users can customize the appearance of their site by choosing from a number of themes and adding custom headers and footers. It is written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. It requires an Apache web server, PHP4.3.x with MySQL. register_globals should be on due to a session-related bug in PHP4.3.
Magnolia - Magnolia Content Management System - A Content-Management-System (CMS) supporting the JCR API (JSR-170). It is written in Java, JavaScript, and JSP. It has an easy to use WebBrowser Interface, a clear API and a useful custom tag library for easy templating in JSP and Servlets. Magnolia runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems. It is distributed under the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License. It supports users in Chinese (Simplified), Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish languages.
Siteman - Siteman personal website CMS - A Content Management System that is so easy to install and use, that a person who has no knowledge about creating homepages can get a professional looking website up and running in just minutes. Uses Flat-file data organization. It is written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Callisto - An XML/XSL Web-based Content Management System built on AxKit. It supports WYSIWYG XML content editing, transactional site deployment to multiple target webservers, multiple users, virtual hosting support and other features. Written in PERL, it runs on all Linux/BSD/UNIX sysstems. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
igloo - renamed DoubleSpeak - Igloo Weblog - A content management system that is designed to be easy to use Written in PHP, it runs on Linux/BSD/UNIX systems. igloo is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Pratt CMS - A Content-Management-System that provides an easy, inline WYSIWYG HTML editor. User permissions are implemented for the database side. It has a modular organization and a test environment. Pratt is written in PHP and JavaScript, and runs on Linux/BSD/UNIX, BeOS. Pratt is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Magellan - A powerful content management system designed for Ampoliros. It is one of the most commonly used Ampoliros modules and serves as a Web gateway platform for many other Ampoliros modules. Content is strictly separated from aspect and from code, and both are entirely administered through Magellan. Magellan offers a granular web users permissions handling from a central page. For each single defined element and even for whole pages, it allows the web master to set access permissions. Magellan also handles the P3P cookie privacy policy format.
Engine - An application Framework for rapid site building, based on PHP/MySQL/Smarty/Pear/xHTML/CSS. A Content Management System Portal is included, using fully customizable templates / styles / themes. Distributed under the GNU General Public License. English, French.
raSMP - A fast, simple and completely flexible Content Management System. It offers webmasters a chance to administer a site entirely via a multi-user web interface. It is written in PHP and supports both PostgreSQL and MySQL Databases. It is easy to integrate with any system and supports extensions for further capabilities. Distributed under the GNU General Public License.
XS PHP CMS - A very flexible dynamic Content Management System and website engine for groups. It enables the building of sites from several pages to several thousand. It is based on PHP, MySQL and XSPHPLib. XS PHP runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, Linux/BSD/UNIX, and FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD/Apple Mac OS X systems. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
artsys - Article System - A content management system for creating and management of an online periodicals. It is written in HTML/PHP and JavaScript, using MySQL or PostgreSQL. It runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Czech and English.
Siteseed - A PHP/MySQL based Content Management System, capable of handling huge loads. Siteseed is built for speed and ease of use by the editorial staff. It is used by about 2/3 of the Portuguese national TV networks. The need for programming skills is minimal. The entire visual aspect of the website, as well as its functions and contents, are updated and managed using a web browser, from any computer in the network. Furthermore, there are differentiated access levels according to the role ascribed to each and every member of the project management team. Siteseed is written in PHP and runs on Linux/BSD/UNIX and FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD/Apple Mac OS X operating systems. It is distributed under the BSD License. Accommodates English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish users.
PHP-Fusion - An all-in-one content management system written in PHP4. It uses a mySQL database to store all of it's content such as News, Articles, Forum Posts, Shoutbox Posts and more. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
WORK system e-commerce - WORK - A PHP, JavaScript, and Mysql content management system. It models various aspects of site management. Runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems. Distributed under the GNU General Public License. English, French, Spanish.
If-CMS - A very flexible dynamic website engine for group of people as well as single person, capable of building sites from several pages to several thousand. It is based on PHP, APL, and MySQL. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Italian and Spanish.
Krang - A web publishing system/CMS for magazine websites. Krang is a Perl application utilizing Apache/mod_perl, MySQL and numerous CPAN modules. It runs under Linux/BSD/UNIX systems, and is distributed under the BSD License. Krang is a large application with many features. Krang provides a simple story and media editing environment for magazine editors as well as a complete template development environment for web designers. Perl programmers can customize Krang to control the data entered in the story editor as well as the way templates are used to build output. Krang requires Perl version 5.6.1 or later and MySQL version 4.0.13 or later.
LIMB CMF - A comprehensive tool for building scalable, extensible and easy-to-update information resources link Content Management Systems for PHP developers. LIMB uses an object oriented view of content. It is distributed under the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License. For English and Russian users
BLOG:CMS - A comprehensive publishing platform consisting of Weblog, Forum, Wiki and Gallery, written in PHP. It uses MySQL, PostgreSQL (pgsql), or SQLite datbase functionality. BLOG:CMS requires PHP 4.0.6 or later and MySQL 4.0 or 4.1. BLOG:CMS was developed by Radek Hulán, and is distributed under the GNU General Public License. E-Xoopport - An enhanced version of E-Xoops a fork of Xoops CMS. It is implemented in JavaScript, PHP, and PL/SQL. Distributed under the GNU General Public License, and the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License. For Italian language users.
CMS Made Simple - An easy to use content management system for simple stable content sites; that is, sites where the changes are in details. It is written in PHP, and uses MySQL and the Smarty templating system. Runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX including OS X.
Wheatblog App - A web journaling/weblogging content management system, written in PHP using MySQL. It is designed to be a useful system for maintaining blog/weblog and news pages on personal sites. It is straightforward to install and easy to use. Wheatblog was developed to provide a streamlined platform for serious-minded and web-savvy users to expand control over their content. Wheatblog is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Rilke CMS - A PHP/MySQL based content management system. It can be used to publish a variety of websites and/or weblogs. It was designed with simplicity in mind - so that anyone who has used a word processor can use it to update a website. It is written in JavaScript and PHP, and runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems.
OLMS - Open Learning Management System - An online Course Management System, including tools for online teaching including course builder, syllabus, discussion forum, announcements, file uploader, grade book, calendar, secure login, and email list. It was developed at The University of Utah and is written in Java. 
ndCMS - Nickel and Dime CMS - A Content Management System built in ASP.net and C#. It includes a roles based user manager, template manager, WYSIWYG editor, a File Manager, built-in HTTP Compression and friendly URLs. It has two interfaces, known as "Express" and "Advanced Edit." ndCMS runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003, and requires IIS 5 or later and .NET Framework 1.1. It is distributed persuant to the GNU General Public License. The goal of ndCMS is to provide a quick and easy way to deploy a .net website while saving you time and money. ndCMS utilizes the MaxVirtual.Data database wrapper which enables ndCMS to be run with Oracle MSSQL, Access, MySQL, SQLite, and other SQL type database systems.
Ciamos - A Content Management System based on the popular E-Xoops CMS. Is is designed to be robust, effective and simple to use. Ciamos is intended for personal or organisational use where the priority is to get content presented simply and quickly. It is written in PHP and distributed pursuant to the GNU General Public License. 
ReloadCMS - A free CMS written on PHP and based on flat files. It does not need any database installed. It has a modular organization, and implements templates, users management, an advanced permissions system, and a standard modules package. Distributed under the GNU General Public License. Supports users in Czech, English, French, Greek, Russian, Slovak, Swedish, and Ukrainian languages.
Ferret CMS - A Content Management System based on Zope. It is focused on easy administration and fast deployment of a web site. It has a workflow mechanism with roles that can be assigned to backend users. It is written in Python and runs on Linux/BSD/UNIX systems. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and Spanish language users.
openi-cms - An XAMP-Content-Management-System, which is fast, easy to use and runs out of the box. It comes with a very simple extension-API and contains a XML-based template-engine. openi-cms is written in JavaScript and PHP runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. German language.
wwEdit - A simple Content Management System focusing on flexibility and usability. It is written in class-based PHP, using smarty-templates for all extra functionality. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License and is for German language users.
SPIN CMS - A basic content management system for Mysql and PHP, and uses the programming language PROGRESS. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
eZ publish - A content management system and a development framework. The content management system is standardized as to its functionality and solutions, but the development framework consists of flexible engines for further customization and extensions. eZ publish runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, Linux/BSD/UNIX, and FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD/Apple Mac OS X systems. It is written in PHP and requires PHP 4.3; it will not work with PHP 4.4. It is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
lucidCMS - A simple and flexible content management system for the individual or organization that avoids the overhead and complexity of other "community" CMS options. lucidCMS is designed to be easy to install and to use. It will run efficiently on shared hosting accounts where disk space and features may be at a premium. Once installed, all configuration options can be changed from the user interface. lucidCMS began as a rewrite of Adam Newbold's Open Source project, but is really a new product. It is primarily a system to manage a collection of individual pages to be rendered dynamically from templates, with tag-replacement of content items. lucidCMS runs on any system with PHP 4.3.4 or later and MySQL. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Platypus CMS - An online/offline content management system written in PHP. It runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and Linux/BSD/UNIX systems, and is distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and Finnish language users.
Exponent - A full-featured, modern CMS written in PHP, that enables non-technical people to manage and update their websites with minimal effort. Exponent is also an attractive development platform for traditional and non-traditional web applications. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
JAF CMS - just another flat file CMS - A personal home-page oriented content management system engine without database needed for small private sites. It is easy to install and to use. It includes a page editor, and page creator. Apache web server is recommended and PHP 4.4.xor later is required; in adddition, JAF CMS requires a "forth generation" browser that supports style sheets and JavaScript. JAF CMS is distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and Indonesian language users.
SyzygyCMS - A website content management system created using PHP. It can use either MySQL or a flatfile database system. Distributed under the GNU General Public License.
PHPCrossTalk - A content management system based on the PHP scripting language. CrossTalk is configurable and allows end users to format content views and allows developers to create new components that merge with end-user view modifications. Distributed under the GNU General Public License.
d.net - A Content Management System for people who don't want to deal with a content management system. It is implemented with PHP and MySQL. d.net is intended primarily for users desiring a 'Blog+' without the hassle of learning cryptic commands abbreviations. It provides a web-based WYSIWYG interface, and supports extensions. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
MyFirstCMS - A Content Management System which is easy to use. It is written in PHP using a MySQL database. It supports templates, multiple languages, workflows, calendars, etc. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. For English and German language users.
CAT2 - A content management system based on a PHP-class model, providing a simple interfece to an SQL database. Its has a simple user management subsystem and a plug-in interface. Distributed under the GNU General Public License. Russian.
McGeekCode - A low overhead, fast content management system in PHP. It is designed for apache serve 1.3 or later, MySQL 3.23 or later, and PHP 4.3. It features an RSS reader, gallery and gallery commenting, boards, content ownership, user management and a simple interface. It was created as an alternative to more ponderous systems such as EzPublish, and Movable Type. It runs under Linux/BSD/UNIX/FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD/Apple Mac OS X systems, and is distributed under the BSD License.
ReaX - ReaX the.system - A content management system and web portal. ReaX-Core enables basic functionality, and full potential for customization and scalability is realized through modules. The package includes an extensive template-editor. ReaX is written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License.
