About this quarter

The original Alaska quarter 25-cent coin was issued in 2008.

Alaska was the 49th state to be admitted to the Union, on January 3rd, 1959.

The design features an image of a grizzly bear emerging from the frigid waters clutching a salmon within it's jaw.

A North Star, the inscription "The Great Land" are part of the original coin design.

How was this cut coin made?

This quarter has been hand-cut-out with a tiny saw blade -- not cut by a machine or laser. First several holes were drilled thorough the coin surface, then a coin cutter with decades of coin cutting experience used a jewelers blade to "cut away" the background, leaving the remaining design as you see. The cut coin design remaining is that part of the coin "un cut."

The original coin came from the same coins you see every day, but the those areas your see in the photo that are darker have been removed -- cut away -- creating a pendant for use a jewelry.  Then it has been used as a pendant.

You cannot spend it any more -- it is now jewelry.

The coin may look fragile, but at closer look you notice the design is secure to the coins edge with special angle cuts (sometime referred to as pyramid cuts).  These connections are thicker on the bottom and almost invisible at the top.

The photo may be larger or smaller than the actual coin size, and the coin is not gold plated. Some computer screens may show more yellow color, making the product appear gold in color.  It is not.  The coin is the same color of coins we carry every day.
