It was in 1830, on the good ship Corlo, Calcutta-bound, out of Boston that an inspiration came to the youthful Samuel Colt. Six years later, in Paterson, New Jersey the original Colt was made by the Patent Arms Manufacturing Company.

In three of the Civil War Years Colt's new plan in Hartford , Conn., furnished 317,920 revolvers - fine models, worthy predecessors of the scientific Colt of today - the gun which, in automatic form, shot respect into the whole world's foe on the battlefields of France.
