Card signed "James J. Blanchard " in blue ink. B/w, 4¾x7 overall, 4¼x6½ image. Blanchard, born in Detroit, Michigan in 1942, is an American politician, who served two terms as 45th governor of Michigan. He was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1968 and served as legal advisor to the Michigan secretary of state from 1968 to 1969 and worked in the state Attorney General's office from 1969 to 1972. Blanchard was elected as a Democrat to represent the 18th Congressional District in the House of Representatives after joining the Michigan law firm of Beer and Boltz. He served there from 1975 to 1983 and helped to provide federal loans for Chrysler that saved the company from a possible bankruptcy. Michigan voters elected Blanchard governor in 1983; he was defeated in 1993 by Republican state senator John Engler. Blanchard was the 1992 chairman of Bill Clinton's presidential campaign, and Clinton made him ambassador to China from 1993 to 1996. He ran for governor again in 2002, but lost in the primary. Blanchard joined the Washington, DC law firm of DLA Piper in 2004 and is still a partner there as of this biography. Lightly toned. Signature faint but legible. Otherwise in fine condition.
